Recommendations for Proper Sod Installation & Post Installation Care

10 Simple Steps For Installing Batavia Turf

  1. Grade area to be sodded to approximately 3/4" below the desired finished grade and allow for proper drainage.
  2. Apply BT Superior Starting Fertilizer
  3. Begin installing the sod at the furthest point and work your way out. Place full rolls of sod along the outside edges to act as a border and install any smaller pieces on the inside. Lay all sod as tight as possible but do not overlap.
  4. Water sod lightly as you install in warm weather to prevent drying out. Upon completion, water all sod thoroughly.
  5. Roll with a hand roller and tamp any areas that cannot be rolled.
  6. Water thoroughly for 14 days after installation.
  7. Roll lawn again 5 -6 days after installation but before watering that day.
  8. You may mow your lawn 1 week after installation  if needed, but be careful not to disturb the turf.  Do Not use a riding mower for the first 45 days.Never mow more than 1/3 of the plant at any mowing.
  9. Mowing your lawn in different directions at 1 1/2" height and removing the clippings (during the Spring and Fall) can keep your lawn well-groomed and slow down the thatch buildup on your lawn.
  10. Your lawn was fertilized upon installation and we recommend fertilizing it again 30 days after installation.

Roll Out Time
It is very important to roll out sod as quickly a possible after delivery. Sod must be unrolled within 12 hours after delivery to insure that sod quality is maintained.  Failure to do so may result in extreme heating and damage to the sod, causing it to turn brown and possibly die.

Sunlight
First note that all Kentucky Blue Grass Sod should be installed in areas providing a minimum of 3 hours of available sunlight daily.  It is not suited to extreme shade.  Please inquire about our shade-tolerant turf.

Soil
To prevent shallow root development, turf should not be installed on clay or heavy subsoil. We recommend a minimum of 3-4" of high quality top soil.

Watering
Sod should receive 1" of water per day for a two week period..

Specially Blended Fertilizers
